Practice between lessons

Short, manageable exercises help to build confidence between lessons. These are always optional, but a little regular practice will make a real difference.

Music Theory FAQs

If you are not sure where to start, these answers should help. If you would like some advice, do feel free to email me and I will suggest the best next step.

Do I need to play an instrument?

No. An instrument can be helpful, but we learn theory using written examples.

Is this suitable for children and adults?

Yes, lessons are one-to-one and tailored to the individual, whether you are a young beginner or an adult returning to music.

How much practice do I need to do?

A little and often works best. Short, regular practice between lessons works much better than trying to do too much at once.

Can this lead into ABRSM Grade 5?

Yes, absolutely. Lessons build the foundations needed for ABRSM-style questions and help prepare pupils for Grade 5.

What do I need for online lessons?

A reliable internet connection and a device with audio are essential. You will also need the appropriate workbook (which is widely available). Being able to print worksheets is helpful, but not essential — and a pencil and rubber are always useful!

How long will it take to reach Grade 5?

The simple answer is: it varies. Every pupil is different, and it will depend on your starting point, how quickly you pick things up, and how much time you can give to practice between lessons.
